An unbalanced Obsession with people acts against logical thinking and self-integrity. We fall victim to our illusions, and we act without thinking. Sometimes we call this stupid love action and If you want to witness this maniac obsession and stupid love then Ride or Die is the perfect movie to define it. In Japanese, this movie is titled Kanojo.

In present-day Tokyo, the film follows Rei Nagasawa acted by Kiko Mizuhara, a dermatologist and, surprisingly, even a plastic surgeon. Rei meets a man at a bar and goes to visit him for some free time, when suddenly, unexpectedly, she slits the man's throat with a scalpel. Covered in blood, Rei feels deep regret.



The movie goes back in time to reveal Rei's motives. Rei is a lesbian who is very much in love with a straight girl named Nanae Shinoda acted by Honami Sato. Nanae was poor and slept and stole things to support her education. Rei really wanted to sleep with Nanae so she offered her money because she was from an affluent class. Nanae declined to take the money and Rei's proposal, but they became quite good friends.


A few years later, in the present, Nanae calls Rei and tells her that she is the victim of her husband's domestic violence. Nanae's body is brutally wounded and her individuality is smashed. She is on the verge of harming herself. Unable to face her condition, Rei decides to eliminate her husband, the same man she killed in the very first sequence of the movie.

 


Now both Rei and Nanae are hiding from the police. They decide to surrender, but Rei decides otherwise. She wants to live her fugitive life with Nanae. The film further explores their complicated relationship, where one lesbian girl tries to make love with a straight girl, not knowing if the passion force is love or just lust.


During her journey, Rei struggled to find love or approval from Nanae. She sacrificed her normal life; she killed him for her, but Nanae still considers her a friend and nothing more. The thought angers her to the core. After a huge war of words, Rei finds some coins and a restaurant voucher in Nanae's bag. Nanae kept the restaurant bill and coins as a cherishing memory of the past. It belonged to the last time they met before they parted ways in college. That gesture melts the barrier between the two and they both decide to run away forever.

Nanae and Rei start their new life near the beach. They start living in a tree house and call themselves the family that Nanae wanted for a long time. And yes, they end up sleeping together.
The next morning, after waking up next to Nanae, Rei walks down the road. She looked pleased. She spots a public booth and calls someone. Moments later, the police arrive and arrest both Nanae and Rei at the gas station.
In the last moments, Rei does not try to escape. She is not even shocked to see the police. The look on her face represents Rei calling the police and turning herself in. Now movie leaves it to the audience to think whether Rei just wanted to be with Nanae for once. She wanted the comfort of being loved by Nanae, and when she finally got that love, her search for Nanae's love ended. Because of this, Rei finally decided to shoot herself and stop escaping the world.

When the police take Rei away, Nanae, now in love with her, promises to wait for her. This gives Rei a ray of hope. Maybe they can start it again and this time without using each other or running from the police.
