Director Peter Berg brings an intense and almost frantic approach to Netflix's six-episode series "Painkiller." While his urgency in depicting the origin of the opioid crisis caused by Purdue Pharma's actions is commendable, the portrayal ultimately lacks depth. Each episode starts with glimpses of individuals who lost loved ones due to addiction, delivering a fictionalized disclaimer and acknowledging elements rooted in reality. This serves as a poignant reminder of the series' focus on how greed wreaked havoc on lives. However, despite these heartfelt efforts, the characters remain underdeveloped, the filmmaking choices are aggressive, and subtlety is absent, leading to a struggle in finding the appropriate emotional tone.
